Marine pilots
Is your favourite part of the voyage the approach to the port?
- Is manoeuvring the ship the icing on the cake, for you?
- Are you looking for new career possibilities?
- Do you want to work ashore but still want to be involved with life at sea?
Then the job of marine pilot is the one for you!
As a marine pilot you get to combine the best of both worlds: that of a varied profession with responsibility that specialises in manoeuvring, and one that means that you’re not too far from home.
Training
To become a marine pilot, a period of training has to be undertaken. It is intense, full of variety and practical and lasts for the duration of 10 to 13 months (depending on the region), in which time you will become a specialist within your field. What follows will be a challenging and diverse career. A selection of candidates will be made prior to the training period. This will consist of a practical examination, a psychological test, and an interview.
Certificates
Before you can be considered for the position of marine pilot, you will have to have gained your Chief Mate’s certificate for all ships and be in the possession of a Marcom-A certificate.
Are you an officer of the Royal Navy?
If this is the case, then you too can apply to become a trainee marine pilot.
