Piloting
A number of different means can be used to transfer marine pilots to and from ships:
Via the pilot boat
There are two different stations at sea where pilot boats are situated. These are the northern pilot station ‘Steenbank’ (Dutch), and the southern pilot station ‘Wandelaar’ (Flemish). These pilot vessels use a number of fast, jet-driven yawls that have been specially designed to ensure that the vessel to be piloted will not be delayed. A fast tender is used to transport the pilot to and from this pilot boat.
The Helicopter
On request, marine pilots can be taken to and from a vessel by means of a helicopter.
